The Illusion at First Glance: Yet, It’s in the Details
At first glance, the overall picture tells a story—but it does not tell the full story.
Let's look closely, perhaps you'll find something you missed.
Field notes: It's in the details.
Upon closer inspection, you will notice that the foliage is not simply beige with brown and green leaves. It is made from a mixture of textures: printed cardstock, plain chipboard with white paint splatters, and parchment paper.
You may also notice that many of the pieces do not lie flat. They are raised from the surface, adding another layer of dimension.
Here, at first glance, you may notice the sign that says Botanic. But upon closer inspection, you will see a brown picket fence resting on different fabric textures—ivory burlap and beige lace.
When looking closely at this corner, you will notice a thin layer of gold wax resting ever so lightly on the surface.
Finally, upon closer inspection, you may be able to make out a book page covered with a thin layer of gesso, removing focus from the story itself. More importantly, you may notice the design of the stencil used on the book page, and how it came to life with the use of some modeling paste and ink.
Why is this important?
When we neglect to take the time to pay close attention to the details, there is much we can miss at first glance. The littlest of details that bring it together.
The same goes when reading God’s Word, it is important to pay close attention to every detail because even one detail can change what we see.
When we rely on others to tell us what God’s Word is saying, we receive the perspective of someone else—a view seen through their lens.
Their understanding can then become our understanding.
When we look at the canvas, we may naturally begin to see what we have been told to see.
But what if they missed something?
Could that missing detail change the trajectory—the direction or outcome—the picture was meant to take?
Imagine this canvas being shown to a random group of people. At first glance, each person may see something different. Even after paying close attention, they may notice different aspects of the details that were pointed out.
Someone may notice everything listed above but still miss one important detail:
The mushroom artwork on the canvas came from a printed napkin that was glued onto the surface.
Does it matter?
As a mixed-media artist, the overall canvas is my artwork. I chose the elements and different forms of media and brought them together to create the finished piece.
However, the original mushroom artwork is not mine.
Using printed napkins is not uncommon in mixed-media art. But if someone asked me about the image, I would never claim that I had created it. I would explain that it came from a napkin I purchased and used as part of the piece.
Only the artist can fully reveal the intention and details behind the artwork. Without the artist's guidance, perception can be obscured.
When something has not been revealed, it is our responsibility to look carefully—or to ask questions before discussing the piece with others as though we fully understand it. Never rely on outside sources for full understanding, unless the artist explicitly designates an alternative authority.
Truth matters.
Details matter.
God's name matters.
Order matters.
It's important to reflect—
